Internship Summary:

Shell Oil Company has selected UNCF to participate in its second annual summer Non Profit Internship Program. This exclusive opportunity awarded twenty-five Greater Houston organizations with funds to provide a deserving student with an eight-week stipend. The intern will play a key role in a fast paced, heavy workload, deadline driven, team oriented office. This eight-week paid project-based internship is available for applicants from all backgrounds who possess strong moral work ethics and is committed to quality results. Upon completion of the program, the intern will have had opportunities to improve and expand upon interpersonal skills such as: public speaking, problem solving, time management, prioritizing, and personal presentation.

We seek an individual to help us strengthen our fundraising efforts by increasing the support received from foundations and individuals.

Foundation

Research: small to mid-sized private, individual, family, and corporate foundations to determine: giving history, board members, areas of support, application deadlines, and proposal contacts.

Proposal Packets: customize and update UNCF grant proposal templates requesting support for submission purposes. Packets will include all standard required information such as: W-9, 990, tax exempt letters, audits, cover letters, letters of intent, and board lists. Based on research and deadlines intern will need to ensure complete grant request process (mailing, follow-ups) by the end of the internship. Ensure that all grant related materials are updated with current statistics, financials and rosters. Work with Administrative Assistant to identify an area within the office for grant materials to be readily accessible including our share drive.

Calendar: create a fiscal year timeline for submitting grant requests based on research and information in files. Create a wall calendar backing into grant submission dates by one month and adding the information to Outlook. In addition, work with Administrative Assistant to schedule meetings for the Executive/Area Development Director and Development Director to meet with foundation executives and grant managers. Lastly create thermometer to track fundraising progress for the fiscal year.

Individuals

Newsletter: update layout, writing copy, obtain images and produce bi-annual newsletter by interviewing students, alumni, donors. Work with staff to organize mailing of Summer/Winter edition to be completed by July 2015.

Year End/Holiday Appeal: By August 2015, utilize past solicitations to create an appeals to be mailed in November. Packet should include compelling letter that highlights a student and UNCF’s local impact. Determine on-hand materials to include in the appeal such as: response cards, calendars, bookmarks, fans, key chains, etc.

Donor/Volunteer Appreciation Event: work with Administrative Assistant to create, plan, and execute a no-cost event to thank individual donors at the $1,000 and above level.

Required Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and internet
  • Ability to present information concisely and effectively (verbal/written)
  • Organized, efficient, and able to prioritize
  • Must be a self-starter
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Previous not-for-profit experience a plus
  • Able to perform normal physical demands such as lifting/moving and carrying up to 25 lbs.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct preliminary research to identify potential donors of education from our service area among private, individual, family, and corporate foundations. Prospect list will include current, lapsed, and new constituents who have the capacity to give at the $5,000 – $25,000.
  • Develop and design a comprehensive timeline/calendar based on our fiscal year for submitting proposals using Outlook and wall calendars to be implemented by the Administrative Assistant. Timeline to include cultivation meetings and follow-up tasks.
  • Customize and update grant proposal packets with the greatest appeal for support. Organize office area to store materials for easy access.
  • Produce quarterly newsletter and end of year appeal by writing copy, obtaining quotes, interviewing donors, redesigning layout and overseeing mailing.
  • Assist with creating and executing a donor/volunteer thank you event: find venue, secure in-kind support, draft script, maintain guest lists, prepare materials, work with media, and other duties as assigned.

The office is charged with raising $2.1 million in unrestricted and restricted funds through development campaigns such as special events, workplace giving, foundation grant requests, and individual donor solicitations.
