Project Restore was a Success

On Saturday, February 7, 2015, the M. C. Williams S.T.E.M. Scholars and Houston Area Urban League of Young Professionals partnered up for the first school wide ‘Prettification with a Purpose’ restore project. Volunteers and students divided into small groups to complete the painting of paws on the sidewalks and building, repainting the garden tool shed, book inventory, remodeling of the library, landscaping in the school’s garden, installing solar paneled lights, creating signs for the garden, and trash pick-up.

There were 19 members of HAULYP led by Co-Community Chairperson, Didi Itauma and 27 M.C. Williams’ scholars who participated in the event. Volunteers and scholars were very excited about the work they completed and the networking opportunities developed. Ms. Breaux, Plant Operator for Williams stated, “It was really great to have volunteers on campus to assist in projects that take a team to complete. The school received a mini make-over in a matter of hours. The scholars were extremely excited about helping with the trash pick-up and painting. I can’t wait until the next beautification day.” Many of the students expressed their interest in the gardening activities as well as helping their school’s appearance overall. Mr. Eiland, 7th Dean stated, “This Saturday’s event was beneficial for the school, the scholars and me. The volunteers not only helped with organizing the book room but also spoke with scholars about their choices in life regarding career, finances and college. Volunteers took the time to share their personal career choices with scholars and explained the importance of hard work, dedication and commitment in any field of choice. Overall, the community service, served in more than one way for the M. C. Williams Campus.”

Williams’ hopes to make this a monthly event for all stakeholders to participate in. Principal Busby stated, “I am really excited about the work that was completed on Saturday. The volunteers were actively working and getting the job done. We are truly grateful for their assistance and look forward to their return.”
